Breakout Sessions

1) 4..3..2..1.. BLASTOFF! How to Launch Your New Business Idea in CanadaFlavio Assis, Paula Felix & Debbie Palmer

Want to open a business and not sure where to begin? Let’s explore the ‘count down’ to a successful launch.

This session will fill the needs of small business owners and would-be entrepreneurs, new to Canada, who have a great business idea but are either stuck in the early stages of business launch OR are wondering how and when to begin. Participants will come away from the session with information and resources allowing them to feel confident about the first and next steps to take to create a viable and sustainable business in British Columbia.

2) Networking To Get Working  – Nick Noorani

Networking in Canada is a huge opportunity, but not many newcomers know how to use it effectively to create a brand for themselves and to get a job that matches their expertise. Nick will cover some basic points like why networking is so important, how to network strategically and use online and in person events to create your own professional network. He will also share some of his own secrets that have helped him use LinkedIn and social media to build his own business.

3) Volunteering: A Path to Leadership & Empowerment – Solomon Iwegim, Sandhya Ghai, Ruchi Lall, & Ana Maria Bustamante

Volunteering may not be generally associated with leadership opportunities. This session will showcase there are many ways for immigrants to volunteer and get to decision-making positions. The SCOPE program is an example that has led immigrants to board rooms, better employment opportunities and a sense of fulfillment from making an impact in their communities.
